Ok I want to build a pc for my living room from scratch. I have seem many tutorials online, but they dont really go the way I would like to have a media center pc. I would like it to have the following features:

- Record analog, digital and HD signals from cable, satellite or any other tv input source.

- outputs to both analog and HD TV.

-record 2 shows at once.

- be able to watch DVD and burn DVDs (not interested in bluray yet, too expensive, but maybe in the next 2 years yeah).

- play 5.1 surround sound or higher (already got a creative speaker set, but they connect directly to a pc). Also have the option to input sound from a game console into the pc so it can come out the speaker set (this seem to be the hard part).

- be able to use the internet, watch pictures, listen to music networked from another pc, connect my ipod, etc.

- play emulator games.

Please guide me to the correct area, even if it is purchasing it.

I have an HP desktop PC with a Cable TV tuner (PCI) . What I want to do is watch stations (legally) from the desktop but the place i live in currently doesn't have Broad Band cable.

What alternatives are there to receiving tv signals wirelessly. I was thinking about getting a mini satellite dish and a dish-network subscription,,,will this work? And will this work with a cable card hooked up to the dish?

It should do! Unless the bravia has got some odd connector on it, a straight male to male 15 pin D cable should suffice.
It's a pretty standardised format, unless you are using a Mac.

I currently have direct tv and because of the snow storm the past week I haven't had any service. They told me their is nothing they can do because of the snow. I am thinking of going back to cable.
RT we did use a broom to get the snow and ice off. Their is still no service.

I have been with Dish network for about 11 years. It's way more dependable than Time Warner ever was.

Lost signal due to snow? Did you clean the show out of the dish antenna? We have to do that even with the really big dish antennas. I'll bet the cable company in your area had to clean their antennas, too so they could receive the satellite signals they put on the cable system. Just take a broom and sweep it out.

EDIT: The problem would have to be with your local set up or a large part of the country would be out. Have you tried rebooting the receiver? The dish may have moved and is no longer pointing at the satellite, too; that's something I would check. I would think they could get a service tech out to your house. Specifically request that. The "nothing we can do" response is lame.

I recently bought an 42" HD lcd. I'm wanting to use this as a computer monitor/TV in my living room. I've also got a 5.1 surround sound system hooked up to my TV. How can I connect my computer to the TV and use the surround sound with it?

I have a pretty good reciever. My PC has a TV out port and my TV has a PC in port...but if I connect the PC directly to the TV, I won't get surround sound. Is there something I need to use so I can connect my PC to my reciever?

I also have a PS2, DVD player, and a Dish Network satellite reciever to plug into my reciever. Any thoughts?

It all depends on what outputs you have on your laptop. Obviously the video isn't the issue. You need a surround sound capable audio out ... and most laptops don't have them.

You can certainly run a stereo line (1/8 mini-stereo plug to RCA stereo) to an aux input on your receiver (and therefore power the speakers) but it won't give you more than pseudo-surround (matrix surround via, for example, ProLogic processing in the receiver).

You really need a digital coax, optical or HDMI output to connect to an input on the receiver ... but those are rare on laptops.

It can be done if you have the right audio and video cards, but you would need to send the audio directly to your receiver. Your TV won't pass surround sound.
