The way we now rent movies has changed forever.

Although we can still go to our local movie rental shop and get the latest blockbusters and keep them for a couple of nights, the ever changing market is now presenting us with a new, more convenient way to rent DVDs – by post. A whole of host of existing rental companies and new businesses are now offering us the chance to rent the latest DVDs, along with access to a seemingly infinite back catalogue. Not only are the films we want delivered to our door but with most companies you can keep the film for as long as you want…and there are no late fees!

So just how does it all work…

...It's quite simple really…With the majority of online DVD rental stores you simply sign-up, pay a set monthly film, choose which film you want, it is sent to you, you watch it, you send it back, you choose your next film, it is sent to you…and so the cycle continues. With some companies you can even have more than one film and then they do not all have to be returned at the same time. You are in control of how long you keep it, so in theory you could keep it forever but you would still get charged your monthly fee so it of course makes sense to watch films as quickly as you can and send them back in order to get your next film.

This means if a company has a quick turnover and the postal service is reliable then you could be receiving a new DVD every two to three days – not bad for around ten pounds a month!

When cancelling your membership with a DVD rental company it is important that you contact them as soon as you can, especially if you are making the most of a free trial offer.

If at the end of your trial, you do not want to continue using that company, then make sure you contact them before the end of your trial, whether that be in calendar terms or in the amount of free DVDs you have received. If you do not, then you will be charged for your next month's or allocation of DVDs.

Also make sure you have returned all outstanding DVDs that you may still have before cancelling your membership as you may end up being charged for the return postage of the DVD, or even for the actual disc itself.

Finally, always make sure you read the terms and conditions before signing up to any DVD rental company as these will detail full details about how to cancel your membership. Remember, even if you do not read them and still click to accept them then you are still bound by them. If you are still unclear about how to go about cancelling your membership then you should contact the company in question directly for advice.

For those who would like a second television in their home, but are reluctant to spend the money, you can consider watching satellite TV on your PC. While it does not take a vast knowledge of computers and satellites, it does take a couple more pieces of hardware.

While some companies are advertising that with a computer and an internet connection, along with their software available for a one-time fee, a person can begin receiving television shows on their computer once the software is installed. There are also many free to air programs available as satellite TV on your PC, however programming may be limited and for some of the programs you may still have to pay a licensing fee.

In order to watch satellite TV on your PC or listen to the radio, all you need as a PCTV card. One kind is installed in the PC while the other is used as an external device and plugs in to a USB port. Using the computer's built-in circuitry, these cards can decode the satellite signals, enabling users to watch the free-to-air programming. Either type of card can be used to watch a broadband signal, and while some programs may be available by way of a phone line connection, DSL, satellite signals are typically received at 40 megabyte per second.

Using PC Like A Digital Recorder

Your computer will need to have a minimum of a Pentium II, at 333 MHz processor and Windows 98 or higher operating system. You will also need the PCTV card and an open slot in which it is installed or an open USB port to connect the external device for satellite TV on your PC and a CD Rom drive. If your computer has the Windows media player, real player or quick time, your television viewing will be more even and less jumpy.

In order to receive satellite TV on your PC you can run a cable from your satellite dish directly to the computer's PCTV card or an available satellite box. You can also connect your PC by running a cable from your satellite system receiver's RF output to the computer. Direct TV and Dish Network both recommend this method for better picture quality.

Many free broadcasts you can receive as satellite TV on your PC are from all over the world and many will be in languages other than English. However, by watching satellite TV on your PC you can save the programs to your hard drive for later viewing.

My house is set up with Hyper-optic cables for cable but i really want satellite but I have heard a rummer that direct tv can not run a satellite with hyper optic cables.

I suppose you mean Fiber Optic.

If that is the case, in theory, it could be technically possible.
However, the cost of the equipment would make it a monetary impossibility. It simply would be cheaper to run the electrical coax needed.
