Can a Direct tv satellite dish be used as an antenna?
by admin on May.22, 2010, under Uncategorized
I subscribe to Direct tv for my summer cottage and in the warmer months I watch Direct tv broadcasts but I shut it off in the late fall. I still visit a few times between fall and spring and I would like to know if that dish can be used as an antenna for digital signal tv.
Actually it is an antenna - for satellites. It will not work for over the air TV, though. That's a completely different animal.

High Definition DVD – The Format War’s Second Act
by admin on May.20, 2010, under Uncategorized
Once again, there is a technology format war looming on the horizon. Many people don't remember the VHS – Betamax battle that broke out when video players were first introduced, making it possible for people to watch movies at home. This was a case of two non-compatible technologies, each of which was a format for taping full length feature films. Ultimately VHS won out, and the movie companies put out their products in that format - thus dooming Betamax and the product manufacturers that had adopted their technology, not to mention the thousands of consumers that had invested in Betamax players. We now find ourselves on the verge of creating a new set of sore losers.
Skirmishes over LCD versus plasma screen HD TV technology are ongoing, but that type of technology contest isn't as acute because you can watch TV or a movie on either type of screen. Currently, you can also play every DVD available on any DVD player that is in production and on the market. The next generation of DVD players, however, is coming over the horizon in the form of two distinct and incompatible technologies.
Toshiba versus Sony
Toshiba has developed a proprietary technology dubbed high definition DVD (HDDVD) and to support their format has developed alliances with Microsoft and Universal Films, among others. The HDDVD disks will be available in 15GB and two sided, 30GB versions.
By way of comparison, the current DVDs have enough storage for two hours of standard definition (SD) images, while the one-sided 15 gigabyte HDDVD disk can store up to eight hours of high definition (HD) images. The difference between SD and HD is simply twice the number of pixel lines displayed on the screen in the HD format, thus providing a crisper picture. The increased capacity of these disks will also allow for interactive features such as screen-in-screen director's discussion of movie scenes playing behind him that today's standard DVDs cannot support.
In the other corner is the Blu-Ray technology developed by Sony, who has lined up support from Apple, Disney and 20th Century Fox. Both formats use blue laser technology, which has a shorter wavelength than red, allowing it to read the smaller digital data "spots" packed a lot more densely onto a standard-size disc. Blu-Ray disks are designed to carry up to 50GB of digital material, which may mean that Sony wins the compression competition.
The Early Rounds
Sony Pictures released the first six films on Blu-Ray disks in June of this year, and have released a few more since. Samsung has a Blu-Ray DVD player in the stores, while Sony's hardware division has released a Blu-Ray compatible PC. Toshiba has its initial HDDVD player on the market and there are a limited number of titles available in the format, mostly re-releases of previous first-run features.
Sony clearly jumped out to an early lead, with support from Dell, HP, Mitsubishi and a number of other hardware manufacturers. In addition, Sony Pictures also owns Columbia and MGM, giving them an enormous library to work with. Sony will also fold its technology into the PlayStation 3 gaming machine, their proprietary product whose 2nd version rules the roost in the videogame market.
On the Toshiba side of the battlefield, proponents argue that the HDDVD disks will be cheaper to produce and that it will be comparatively easy for disk replicators to retrofit their equipment for production purposes. The HDDVD format also makes production of recordable DVDs much simpler than with the Blu-Ray design.
Further, an alliance with Microsoft will be a formidable edge in this battle, should it turn into a protracted conflict. Microsoft's operating systems are going to be important cogs in the development of future home viewing systems, as the technology moves closer to merging the functions of computers and televisions. If movie downloads become a commercial success, PC compatibility will be critical for these disks.
The Consumer Issues
One of the reasons that Microsoft aligned with Toshiba's technology is that HDDVD provides for "mandatory managed copy." What that means is that unlike with today's conventional DVDs, managed copy allows consumers to make legitimate copies of their HD movies and enjoy this content around the home or across their personal networks. Making this feature mandatory will ensure a consistent consumer experience across all next-generation DVD content.
Then there is the element of iHD, which is the concept of maximizing high definition video for transport across the internet. This is a specific set of video specs which the iHD.org, a group of tech and media companies, is pushing as a cross-platform standard.
The theory is that next-generation HD movies will provide a level of interactive experience well beyond that of today's conventional DVDs. iHD technology is meant to provide a broad foundation to enable new interactivity with standards-based development tools and technologies.
The pitch for this standard is that it will provide consumers with enhanced content, navigation and functionality for HD films. The business reality is that Microsoft plans to implement iHD support in its Windows Vista operating system, which will not only be a significant step towards integrated video and computer systems but will make help drive adoption of the new Microsoft platform.
Duel to the Death Unlikely
There is some indication that all of these conflicting issues may ultimately force a compromise - some sort of merger or unification of the two technologies. Hardware manufacturers are hedging their bets, with the latest wrinkle being that Blu-Ray-aligned Hewlett Packard has requested that mandatory managed copy and the iHD standard be included in Blu-Ray's feature set. Sony has agreed to include the managed copy feature, but said no to iHD.
The Betamax - VHS battle was a tussle over hardware with the movie companies playing a predominant role, one Sony lost. This time around, there is much more uncertainty about how the next generation of home video will roll out. How will the Web and the PC fit in? Will the movies be delivered via disk or via download? How will the film industry protect its content rights and how can the hardware companies maximize their role?
PCs have become a commodity. If a scenario arises where every household needs a new computer to match up with new video technology, the Dells and HPs of this world stand to win big. If competing technology keeps people from investing in either, every involved business will suffer. If the film and DVD houses have to produce two sets of content and two disks for every film, their margins will grow considerably thinner as well. The tech bloggers seem to be increasingly inclined to believe that unification of some sort is inevitable. The corporations with the most to lose are too smart not to insist on it.

Dishnetwork Satellite TV is Affordable and Very Competitive With Cable
by admin on May.20, 2010, under Uncategorized
Dish Network is a direct broadcast satellite (DBS) company broadcasting digital Satellite Television and audio to homes in the United States. On December 28, 1995 EchoStar successfully launched its first satellite, the EchoStar I. The company EchoStar established the Dish Network name to offer its home satellite TV system to the public. It was a brave, bold new venture. Dishnetwork is owned by parent company EchoStar Communications Corporation and they have been listed for many years on the Nasdaq exchange under the four letter symbol DISH. Dish Network was launched in the early part 1996, and is the competitor of DirecTV in the United States.
The company, EchoStar, was originally formed in 1980 by its chairman and CEO Charlie Ergen when he started as a distributor of C-band television systems. In 1987, EchoStar and Charlie applied for a DBS (direct broadcast satellite ) license with the (FCC) Federal Communications Commission and was granted access to the geostationary orbital slot 119° west longitude in 1992. The “C band” or ("compromise" band) is a part of electromagnetic spectrum as it is designated by physists in the microwave range of frequencies going from 4 to 6 GHz. The GHz stands for GigaHertz which is one billion cycles per second.
EchoStar evolved from a fairly small retail seller of satellite television programming into a leader in the direct to the customer satellite company with operations in over 15 countries. Mr. Charlie Ergen received his Bachelor of Science from the University of Tennessee and later received MBA from Wake Forest University in Winston Salem, North Carolina.
Mr Ergen worked diligently to promote the rights of Americans to receive home entertainment through the dish. For example, he told Congress in 1998:
“For 18 years, we have had kind of a sole purpose, which is to go out and provide competition to other video providers, specifically cable, and offer customers a choice, an alternative, for a way to receive video. Our industry has been able to get over eight million homes with satellite dishes in the last 18 years. In fact, 75 percent of those homes have been installed with the advent of the small pizza-size dishes and DBS.”
He was at the forefront of the movement to allow more competition and reduce the prices of cable and satellite TV. He said later at the hearing:
“Okay. So we are at a crossroads. We have a choice of more regulation or competition. At EchoStar, we vote for competition and we believe we can provide competitive forces to the marketplace. We need to do several simple things. Make the satellite compulsory law statutory and permanent and expand the license to cover all broadcasts of networks and independents and include all viewing areas, including commercial establishments. We need to roll back the present copyright increases for networks and superstations. These rates must be technology-neutral and on a fair and level playing field with cable.”
Thanks to Charlie, Dishnetwork Satellite TV is affordable and very competitive with cable.

Downloading Movies Online – What you Need to Consider
by admin on May.20, 2010, under Uncategorized
Downloading movies online is available to us at many places and all can be done while we are still in pajamas at home. Online movie sales are soaring and presumably would outrun traditional off-the-shelf sales and cinema ticketing revenues in the near future. The ease of downloading movies online and the widespread use of internet in our households have fueled the growth of online movies. Simply click a few mouse buttons, and the movie can be downloaded and burnt onto a VCD or DVD for viewing at our home theater system.
For you to start downloading movies online, there are a couple of things you need to consider when selecting and signing up for a movie website.
1. Format of the Online Movie Files
Please remember to check the format of the online movie files for compatibility with your DVD player or PC movie viewing client. It is safest to sign up for websites that carry movies in the DivX format as this is one of the fastest formats in terms of downloading speeds. Other formats tend to consume quite a huge chunk of your bandwidth and people have complained about how slow it can be to download movies. There are sites that are packed with ready to play movie formats and these are the most convenient places for downloading movies online.
2. Burning of Movie on CD/DVD
Depending on whether you want to burn your movie onto a CD or DVD, it is good to look through the instructions and notes at the site. Find out if they facilitate burning of the movies on CDs. CDs are cheaper if you are downloading movies online to amass a huge collection. But in terms of quality, DVDs are still way better and I would encourage you to get a fast DVD burner if you intend to create a special private movie collection.
3. Picture Quality
The picture quality is of absolute importance. It is going to be a huge disappointment when you realize that the downloaded movie images are so fuzzy that you cannot make any sense out of the show. What a waste of time and effort! Go for DVD quality movies as these are now available at several popular download sites. Downloading movies online should be an enjoyable experience. Don’t let poor picture quality ruin the experience.
4. Movie Selection
Make sure that they offer the latest movie releases. It is our duty as consumers to read the web content and clarify with the sites that this is so. There are sites that offer only old classics and movie hits in the 70s and 80s, while others provide almost any kind of movies, even home videos.
5. Pricing
It is good to look around and compare the prices of downloading movies online. Some websites will charge you per download or monthly subscription. There are also many others which charge you a flat rate to download unlimited movies.
Downloading movies online can be hassle-free if you know what to do. Pick up more hot tips from my blog and read about the favorite movie sites of today.

The channels are seperated by country, with over 140 countries to choose from. As a bonus, we also have some fun features like flash games and daily horoscopes to watch during the commercials. ![]()
This program requires windows media player and realplayer to view all the channels, as most live streams use these programs to transmit their shows.
You also need to be connected to the internet and unblock this program on your firewall to allow the live video feeds to work.
We pride ourselves on having the widest selection of live, streaming television feeds around.
To navigate, please select a country on the left and then a video feed.
These channels all use Windows Media Player and Real Player, both of which are free programs.
Because the streams are live, some videos might be choppy, depending on your internet connection.
Each video feed lists a number of kilobytes (ex: 150k). If the number is high, the quality of the stream is high, but the video might be choppy on slower connections (especially with dialup).

Do you need cable/satellite service to use a tv turner in your PC?
by admin on May.18, 2010, under Uncategorized
I have windows 7, and one of the promo features with it, is that you can use windows media center to watch and record tv on your pc. but you need to get a tv turner for your computer in order to do it. My question is whether you need a cable or satellite tv service provider as well, or if the tv tuner picks up the channels.
You need a source for the PC to record. That could be a cable/satellite tv provider or DVD, or OTA Over the Air channels.

anyone heard of isoftwaretv? Or streamdirect tv, or satellite tv for pc software?
by admin on May.16, 2010, under Uncategorized
I did some searching around trying to find the most legit and best quality internet tv software on the web and everything pointed to one software maker: isoftwaretv.com. I just bought the isoftwaretv.com software which supposedly allows me instant access to over 3000 premium channels including ALL the premium channels you get with cable and also the ones you have to pay your cable company extra for. Well..........uh this is a scam people. Sorry.
First off in the buying process they only have you put in your email address. Usually with ANY legitimate online store or service you create an account. That's the first clue. Then you'll notice in your address bar that in the buying process you're jumping around to different sites completely away from the domain name of isoftwaretv.com. So they have no way of tracking your account if they were a real company. But they aren't so this makes sense. Next, after they charge your credit card through Clicbank.com they show you get two things for your purchase: the isoftwaretv tv watching software download link, and a link that says "access sports streams". What?! I thought the player was supposed to give me all the sports channels that cable does! So I check it out first and it is all the commentary and stuff you get directly off NBA.com or any other professional sports website, but NOT the game itself.
Note that the web address in your browser has changed yet again to http://members-area-tv.com at this point. I'm starting to realize this is for sure a scam. I noticed that I get a receipt from "CLICKBANK" and not isoftwaretv.com. That's funny I thought I purchased my product from isoftwaretv and not from Clickbank. Next, on my emailed receipt from "Clickbank" I see it says "Vendor's Site: http://www.streamdirect.tv" Wow, so I get a receipt from streamdirect.tv but purchased my product from a company who is supposedly called isoftwaretv. Apparently all these internet tv software companies are really just one company putting on different name and look on each of them.
So I'm mad at this point and decide to check out the tv software application. It better be good. I flip through 15 channels and all but two of the channels don't even work. So I see what are these other 2985 channels....well they are in foreign languages, poor image quality, and basicaly I wouldn't watch these channels at anytime for free. No live sports, no Live NBA or any professional sports at all. I see only about 20 available english channels and...like I said only two work. Then I get these ad-ware spy programs popping up on my computer advertising for pornography and such with windows that when you try to close them they won't let you. Maybe I've made it clear that this product is only a scam and not a product at all.
Funny that no one has bothered to write about this bad company that is nothing more than a scam. Don't believe any positive review on the web, apparently they worked hard enough on their scam operation to fill up the web with false positive reviews. Thing with scams is that it only takes one or two really negative reviews to expose them. So believe my review and don't trust all those other ones. At the very least, if you decided to try the software, make sure you call up your credit card company and reject the charge that was just placed on it if you don't get what you paid for or were led to believe you would receive. That's it, I'm doing that first thing Monday and making sure these guys never get a dime from me. In reading this, please do your duty and notify scam.com or even the FBI to make it less profitable for these type of people.
These guys are tenacious so they can and probably will just do something simple like change the name from the current "isoftware.com" to any other random name after they've been exposed through comments like mine. I think the key take-away message here is that internet tv if not freely available on a place like hulu.com or doesn't come up first choice in a google search then it is just not available. If free tv were available then it would be freely available and easy to find, with no software purchase. TV programs are made by and produced by and paid for by their respective networks. NBC produced the shows and paid the salaries of Conan O'Brian, and Jay Leno, etc. That means their content is all theirs and no one gets it unless NBC makes it available to them. Why would they give it away when they have companies like COMCAST paying them for access to their content?
I'm not sure about this but I'm thinking that " satelite TV for PC " might be this same company, but you can refuse the charge on your credit card statement if you do check it out and find it a scam as well.
It is a scam fo sho. Actually, it is many different companies - affiliates of a few main software providers.
Buyer beware.

Buy dvd movie and create your own collection
by admin on May.14, 2010, under Uncategorized
People around the world are fascinated with cinematography. This is because when you watch a movie you can escape from the world around you and your daily worries so you can enter a world filled with excitement and interesting stories.
Not too long ago we relied on books to offer this kind of entertainment. Every page we read took us further along the path of our heroes and we couldn’t wait to see what happened next. We imagined the world where the action took place and what our heroes and their nemesis looked like. Today the action that happens in books is transposed onto the screen.
The creation of movies allows the viewers to see what they read about and not struggle to imagine all the things mentioned afore. And if you don’t want to go to the cinema every time you want to watch a movie there is also the option to buy dvd movie.
When you go to the cinema, there are lots of people that can create unpleasant situations, you can hear lots of weird noises that can distract your attention from your main purpose of visit. When you buy dvd movie, you can sit back and enjoy all the thrills and excitement this movie has to offer from the comfort of your home, without any disruptions.
Another important advantage that can drive you to buy dvd movie is owning the ones you want. A cinema theatre only grants you access to what they have at a certain time, but you can make your own selections when you buy dvd movie for your collection.
There are lots of times when you are looking to feel good and enjoy another type of entertainment. Let’s say you are with your companion and you both like to watch a certain type of movies in order to get things going. If you buy adult dvd movie and watch it at home, there is nothing stopping you from doing all the things you both enjoy, without anyone looking at you the wrong way.
This is one of the most thriving segments of the movie industry. When you buy adult dvd movie, you will have access to a lot more than just scenes that can get you aroused, you can also learn a thing or two about what your partner enjoys.
If you are looking to buy adult dvd movie, there are lots of places where you can find them. You can try the local video store and check out their collection. However, these types of stores often have a limited collection of such movies.
If you really want to have access to the widest range of adult movies, the best place you can start your search is the internet. One of the most reliable websites with a wide collection of adult movies can be found at enterplayment.com.
This is the best website you could visit if you want to buy adult dvd movie. Apart from these, you can find lots of other things like video games for xbox 360, Nintendo and playstation, the newest editions of music cds and lots of other interesting things.

by admin on May.13, 2010, under Uncategorized
Why most Americans rent movies today - how you can save money on movie rentals online. Rent movies online and save yourself time and money if renting on a monthly basis.
So how do you think most Americans entertain themselves these days? Some of the most celebrated weekend activities include shopping, going to the movies renting movies or having dinner with friends. When it comes to daily entertainment, many people enjoy their spare time and low cost of recreational choices like viewing television, playing video games, and renting movies online.
Why Rent Movies?
People rent movies for many incomparable reasons. One of the most popular departments at your local video store is the new movie releases section. This is where people go to find the most recent films available. It’s a good way to catch up on all the flicks you missed in the theater. It’s also a magnificent way to save money. Before watching a movie at the theaters, many people decide to wait for it to come out on DVD. Several films are ready for rent within months of their theatrical debut.
Some people rent titles to preview them for their DVD collections. While the cost of DVDs has declined in recent years, most people still don’t want to add a movie to their compilation until they know that they enjoy the movie and will watch it again. A DVD rental club is often the best choice for movie buffs. Normally these clubs offer incentives for people who rent DVDs several times a month.
Whether you’re a cinema buff, or just rent movies on occasions, there are many excellent video stores and websites devoted to serving you. The local store is an excellent choice for last minute rentals. The online services are also a great way of renting without the hassles of traveling. They also offer very competitive prices if you rent more than a few times a month. With a little bit of planning you’ll always have a reserve of quality DVDs. There are no late fees, no shipping fees, and at just $20 a month, these sites pay for themselves after just three or four rentals. Netflix, Blockbuster Online, and Intelliflix are just a few in the business that can be worth their weight in gold in the long run.

Consumer Reports – DVD Recorders
by admin on May.13, 2010, under Uncategorized
At the highest-quality setting, the quality of most DVD video recordings is better than that of a VCR. DVD recorders also offer more ways to navigate recordings, with no need to rewind or fast-forward. With certain disc types, DVD recorders can perform functions that no VCR can match, such as letting you watch a program from the beginning while recording is already under way. They also offer a way to convert camcorder tapes or homemade VCR recordings to a digital format. The DVD recorder market is still in its early stages, so it's likely there will be further changes involving disc types, and prices for machines and for blank storage media may drop further.
As of August 2005, there were no DVD recorders capable of recording high-definition (HD) content. HD DVD recorders are in development and could be on the market in 2006. (There are some digital video recorders capable of recording HDTV programs. They are mainly available from satellite and cable companies. However, these use hard discs, not removable DVDs.)
WHAT'S AVAILABLE
DVD recorders are available from many of the same manufacturers that make DVD players. Apex Digital, Panasonic, Philips, Sony, and Toshiba are among the biggest brands. Some DVD recorders store content only on DVDs. Others can also use VHS tapes, hard drives, or both. Price range: DVD-only recording, about $150 and up.
IMPORTANT FEATURES
As with any other video recorder--including digital cameras--a recorder's storage capacity varies in actual usage. DVD recorders store content at different compression settings and thus at different quality levels. For the best image quality, you have to record programming at the device's lowest level of compression, yielding as little as one hour of recording time. To get the maximum capacity advertised--typically six or eight hours--you have to use the highest level of compression, which gives the lowest quality.
All rewriteable DVD formats let you edit, to varying extents, what you've recorded. DVD-RW (in VR mode) and DVD-RAM recorders let you edit more extensively than does DVD+RW. Besides letting you watch one program while recording another, recorders with DVD-RAM capability and some with DVD-RW in VR mode let you watch an earlier section of a program while you're still recording it.
As with VCRs, DVD recorders may use VCR Plus to ease the setup of time-shift recordings. Some also come with Gemstar or TV Guide On-Screen, free interactive program guides that get three days of listings at a time from your TV signal. They offer point-and-click setup of recording events.
In addition to commercial DVD titles, DVD recorders often support playback or display of numerous other disc formats. They include CD-R/RW discs containing standard CD-audio information; the recordable DVD formats DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW, and DVD-RAM; Video CD (VCD); and DVD-Audio and Super Audio CD (SACD). They can also play CD-R/RW discs containing MP3 and Windows Media Audio (WMA) files and JPEG picture files. Make sure a model you're considering plays the discs and formats you use now, or may want to use in the future.
DVD-based movies often come in various formats. Aspect-ratio control lets you choose between the 4:3 viewing format of conventional TVs (4 inches wide for every 3 inches high) and the 16:9 ratio of newer, wide-screen sets.
A DVD recorder gives you all sorts of control over the picture--control you may never have known you needed. Picture zoom lets you zoom in on a specific frame. Black-level adjustment brings out the detail in dark parts of the screen image. If you've ever wanted to see certain action scenes from different angles, multi-angle capability gives you that opportunity. Note that this feature and some others work only with certain discs.
A DVD recorder enables you to navigate the disc in a number of ways. Unlike a VHS tape, most DVDs are sectioned. Chapter preview lets you scan the opening seconds of each section or chapter until you find what you want; a related feature, chapter gallery, shows thumbnails of section or chapter opening scenes. Go-to by time lets you enter how many hours and minutes into the disc you'd like to skip to. Marker functions allow easy indexing of specific sections.
To get the best picture quality when playing DVDs, you need to hook up the recorder/player to the TV with the best available connection. A composite-video connection to the TV can produce a very good picture, but there will be some loss of detail and some color artifacts such as adjacent colors bleeding into each other. Using the S-video output can improve picture quality. It keeps the black-and-white and the color portions of the signal separated, producing more picture detail and fewer color defects than standard composite video.
Component-video, sometimes not provided on the lowest-end models, improves on S-video by splitting the color signal, resulting in a wider range of color. If you connect a DVD recorder via an S-video or component connection, don't be surprised if you have to adjust the television-picture setup when you switch to a picture coming from a VCR or a cable box that uses a radio-frequency (RF, also called antenna/cable) connection or a composite connection.
Two newer outputs found on some models, Digital Video Interface (DVI) and High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI), are intended for use with digital TVs with DVI or HDMI inputs. They may be used to pass digital 480p and up-converted higher-resolution video signals. Those outputs potentially allow content providers to control your ability to record the content.
Another benefit of DVD recorders is the ability to enjoy movies with multichannel surround sound. To reap the full sound experience of the audio encoded into DVD titles, you'll need a Dolby Digital receiver and six speakers, including a subwoofer. (For 6.1 and 7.1 soundtracks, you'll need seven or eight speakers.) Dolby Digital decoding built-in refers to a DVD player that decodes the multichannel audio before the audio receiver; without the built-in circuitry, you'd need to have the decoder built into the receiver or, in rare instances, use a separate decoder box to take advantage of the audio. (A Dolby Digital receiver will decode an older format, Dolby Pro Logic, as well.) Most recorders also support Digital Theater System (DTS) decoding for titles using the six- or seven-channel encoding format. When you're watching DVD-based movies, dynamic audio-range control helps keep explosions and other noisy sound effects from seeming too loud.
DVD recorders also provide features such as multilingual support, which lets you choose dialog or subtitles in different languages for a given movie. Parental control lets parents "lock out" commercial films by their rating code.
HOW TO CHOOSE
Decide whether you want to record on removable media. DVD recording is the best option for those who want to share video recordings with other users or to have unlimited storage, allowing recordings to be saved indefinitely. They're also space-efficient, since they can play pre-recorded movies, replacing a separate DVD player. But if none of these attributes is important to you, consider a hard-drive-based DVR instead. If you've decided on DVD recording, here's what to consider in selecting a unit:
Choose between a DVD-only recorder or a combo unit. DVD-only models can cost about half the price of units with a second recording platform such as a hard drive or VCR. The combos are pricier and bulkier but more versatile.
Look for "time slip" capability. It allows you to pause your viewing of a TV program you're recording, while the unit continues to record. You can resume viewing where you left off. Time-slip models also let you view a previously recorded program while recording another. An inherent feature of all hard-drive-equipped recorders, time slip is also available on stand-alone DVD recorders that record to DVD-RAM discs, one of five disc types recorders use. (All models use at least one write-once and one rewriteable disc type; DVD-RAM discs are rewriteable.) But there's a downside to DVD-RAM discs: They can be played on fewer other recorders or players than discs using formats that are more widely compatible. Some models that record to DVD-RW discs in VR mode also have time-slip capability.
Decide what kind of TV-programming capabilities you want. When it comes to programmed recording, a typical DVD recorder can do everything a VCR can. And as with VCRs, some DVD recorders can control a cable or satellite box, allowing you to program the unit to record from various channels without setting the box to the correct channel before each recording. DVD/hard-drive recorders designed to work with TiVo, the subscription programming service, also offer automatic recording of your favorite shows (or performers) whenever or wherever they're on. But that added functionality has a cost: a monthly fee of about $13 or a one-time fee of about $300 (at time of publication). TV Guide On-Screen is a free interactive program guide that is available on some models. While not as versatile as the TiVo programming guide, it does offer point-and-click recording ability.
Decide the importance of video editing. A DVD-only model that records to DVD-RAM discs or to DVD-RW discs in VR mode allows scenes to be subdivided and rearranged onscreen. But the discs aren't compatible with all players, and even if they do play, edits you make on those discs might not show up. DVD/hard-drive models, except for tested models allied with the TiVo service, give you the ability to edit video on the hard drive. You can then burn images to a range of disc types for maximum compatibility with other players.
