Direct TV Provides Unexpected Benefits

Direct TV offers a number of features that will change the way you watch TV. The first, and most obvious feature, is the huge number of channels that you'll have access to with a subscription. With all of those channels to choose from, there will always be something interesting and compelling to watch. The elderly, disabled and parents of small children often find it either near impossible or near improbably to leave the house for the movie store. With a DVD movie rental service you must decide not only what you want to watch, but when. If you're itching to settle down to that little romance you signed up for, but you've requested it for a later date, you're out of luck. It's relatively easy to order movies once you decide to sign with a DVD rental company. Just scroll through their movie index and pick the ones you want to watch. No need to bother going out to rent a video or worrying about late fees. I have a brand new laptop and want to save money and drop my cable/satellite bill. I saw various web sites offering tv to your laptop for one up front payment. Two questions: Is this for real and safe pay wise and spyware/virus wise?
CBS does not have full episodes of The Big Bang Theory though.

Yes it is real. No you won't get a virus.

But you will not get the content that you are currently getting on cable either.

You will only get what you can already get elsewhere on the internet for free already. Not really worth the money...do you really want to watch a newscast from Slovenia?

Also check the major networks websites like NBC CBS etc. They often have there content available to stream.

And maybe invest in an antenna for your TV and get TV the old fashioned way. I get 20 channels in glorious HDTV for free, "over the air", just by using a ten dollar rabbit ear antenna. YMMV.

Thank you to those of whom responded to my other question, now I want to know what type of connection is best to use, SVGA/VGA, VGA/RGB, or is there another connection type out there I'm missing that my Sony Bravia KDL-40EX400 is best suited for?

If your computer graphics card has it, the best would be HDMI. I would recommend getting a video card with this port because they are designed to display on the 16X9 aspect ratio. It also helps to have an operating system that is newer so the display does not stretch the output of your computer.

I am military in ramstein germany i have a satellite dish and was wondering if i could get the either the direct tv or dish network satellite? If i can i was going to order the whole thing from the US cause satellite here sucks. I dont wanna pay 100 euro a month for 10 english channels I'd rather haft to DVR all my shows then pay for crap that will be playing at a convenient time to me.

If you can get hold of a sky dish and box readily available now second hand you should be able to pick freeview channels up in Germany as the Sat's are all above you, we are ex military who caravan a lot in france and have no trouble picking sky up. directions for tuning are found on the web

RFD TV Show Direct TV, Ch 379, about the Rock Island Farmall plant which is being torn down. Max Armstrong interviewed people like Spike O'Dell (radio personality) and former workers and buyers of Farmall tractors. They had a parade of the restored old tractors run through the assembly line area (50 acres where they made up to 350 tractors a day) for one last time.
Great Program!
Kind of sad, but brings back a lot of good memories about a time of American workers sense of pride, prosperity, and "better times for middle class".

If you've ever wanted total control over your television viewing experience, you'll be glad to know that Direct TV is here to accommodate your needs. Direct TV has lots of features which put control of how you watch TV where it should be: in your hands.

One great example of how Direct TV can help you to maximize the control you have over your own television viewing experience can be seen in the on screen program guide that comes standard on every subscription. The on screen program guide is basically a table that you can bring up on your television screen. A lot of attention is paid to the fevered competition between Sony's Blu-ray and Toshiba's HD-DVD High Definition DVD formats, but many analysts and the general public ignore the threats that high def DVD technology in general face from other technologies. Unlike the original DVD format that was introduced almost a decade ago and the video cassette technology that came before it, high def DVD's in general face competition from a number of other technologies that are threatening to make them obsolete before they even get a foothold in the market.

The most obvious source of competition comes in the form of all of the services that are offering movies in HDTV format for download over the Internet. For example, Sony's Bravia HDTV sets can display a variety of HDTV videos that can be downloaded from the Internet. While this service has the disadvantage of only working with Bravia HDTV sets, an increasing amount of HDTV content is expected to be made available and it certainly provides a glimpse of how we can expect to get our HDTV content in the future.

Another service that provides HDTV programming is Vudu. Vudu is basically a set top box that can be used to download movies from the Internet and display them in high definition on an HDTV set. The only catch with Vudu is that the device downloads the movies in standard definition format and then upconverts them to HDTV format before displaying them on the screen. This system has the advantage of conserving bandwidth for easier and faster downloads, but doesn't provide the same level of picture quality as a true HDTV download would. Still, the concept of upconverting standard def video to HDTV is sound and may be able to produce better results with the technological advances of the future.

The Sony Play Station 3 is not only a Blu-ray disc player, but is also expected to be capable of downloading high def movies from the Internet in the near future, making another alternative to High Def DVD's. The Xbox 360 from Microsoft is already capable of downloading HDTV movies from the Internet, but the device is plagued by depressingly long download times- sometimes on the order of eight hours for a standard length movie! Still, these two devices make it obvious that both Sony and Microsoft (which is a backer of HD-DVD) are hedging their bets by embracing the same technology that could make their investments in High Def DVD technology a loss.

One interesting option that has been proposed for getting HDTV content in the future is providing it for consumers on compact, portable hard drives. These hard drives would be enormous in capacity and contain entire archives of movies. Instead of paying for all of these movies all at once, consumers would be able to see what's available to watch on the hard drive and then pay to have the movie that they want to watch unlocked. That way having instant access to a huge number of HDTV titles could be extremely cost effective. Of course, the disadvantage of this is that it would be difficult to add new titles to the hard drive, but maybe that's where Internet downloads could come in- to supplement a larger personal archive, rather than to provide the viewer with everything that she or he may want to watch.
