Can I buy movies on dvd and charge to show a group of people?

I want to show DVD Movies in a theater but charge people to see them. Can't I just say they are 'paying to do something else'?
No. When you buy the DVD, you are agreeing not to profit from the purchase by showing it. You are legally allowed to sell your copy to someone else, but that is it.

I suppose you could, but that would not be honest. It is against copyright law to publicly air movies without consent from the production studio and paying royalties to air the movies. The bulk of a movie ticket goes to the production company. Theaters make their true revenue in concession sales. Very little of the movie ticket cost goes to the theater. If you want to run a movie theatre, look into becoming a entrepreneur and contact a theater corporation about franchise opportunities.

it says in the beginning of the DVD "For Home Use Only"
they do not want people profiting off of it in that way. It’s not legal, sorry.
