How does one go about properly ripping and backing up DVD movies?

I finally got around to setting up my networked entertainment PC, and I'm ready to rip and backup all of my DVD Movies. However, Google turns up zillions of guides which all seems to suggest different methods, programs, codecs, etc. How would one go about ripping a DVD movie in the highest possible quality (space is not an issue)?
