by admin on Mar.25, 2010, under Uncategorized
I need to hook a laptop up to a TV. The laptop has a vga port. the tv has female (yellow/white in front)
audio/video in front.
WHat cable do i need? i assume a VGA to ____
Your laptop video card requires a composite video out to fit the TV video input requirement. VGA output is not compatible with it.

you need a VGA to composite video adapter lead. the red and white ports are for stereo audio and the yellow one is the one you need for video… VGA cannot carry audio though… so all you really need is a vga to (yellow) composite connector.
If your laptop has an s-video connector… sort of looks like a ps2 connector for keyboards you find on motherboards… i would use that to connect it to your tv.
I presume your tv is not an lcd or plasma, otherwise it would have a vga on the back, and you could just go straight from a vga-vga and get a much better picture.

This isn’t necessarily going to work.
Yes, VGA to phono (that’s the name of the plug) on composite video (that’s the name of the video signal, because you can have sound or video or all sorts run down a phono lead).
Try http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PC-Laptop-VGA-to-S-Video-Phono-SVHS-LCD-TV-Cord-Adapter_W0QQitemZ170454925328QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Computing_CablesConnectors_RL?hash=item27afe7c010
However, video is complicated and it might look odd on your screen, but without knowing real details the only thing you can do is try.
