Whats the simplest way to convert my DVD movies into AVI files?

I'm not a computer person but I just want the convenience of movies on a hard-drive instead of a DVD collection to lug around.

download and install handbrake, its free and it works well.
you might need to install dvd43 if there is drm on your dvd’s causing problems with converting them.

1. Handbrake: It is a freeware and can convert your DVD to AVI without problems. I usually use it to rip my DVDs to AVI or MPEG for safely saving in my PC. The download link: http://handbrake.fr/downloads.php . But the freeware may have restrictions which make them cannot deal with all the DVDs.
