Why is windows media center having problems playing dvd movies?

I have vista home premium and when I try to play DVD Movies with media center it says that the files are missing or they have errors and you need to restart to fix it.When I restart it says the same thing. When i use windows media player to play movies it plays but it plays slowly and drags. What could be causing this and how could I fix it?
